NBC Sports to Broadcast Notre Dame Football Home Games in 4K/UHD

The 4K/UHD productions will be distributed to DirecTV subscribers

NBC Sports, in partnership with DirecTV, will broadcast University of Notre Dame football home games in 4K/UHD this season.

nd_football11The 4K/UHD productions – which will be distributed to DirecTV subscribers – will occur as a side-by-side “companion” show with the traditional HD broadcast airing on NBC and will feature the same on air commentators, camera angles, and graphics.

According to an NBC Sports rep, the HD and 4K/UHD shows will leverage the same camera complement but the finished productions come from different production trucks. The 4K/UHD production will look to mirror the HD show in almost every way. Referred to as a “shadow cut,” the technical director (TD) working inside the 4K/UHD truck will be monitoring the director’s call from the primary HD truck and following his calls.

NBC will use Mobile TV Group’s 39 Flex, a 4K double-expando mobile unit for the 4K feed.
NBC Sports Group’s coverage of Notre Dame football begins this Saturday when the Fighting Irish host Nevada at Notre Dame Stadium with kickoff at 3:30 p.m. ET on NBC and pre-game coverage at 3 p.m. ET on NBCSN.

DirecTV subscribers will need to have a 4K-capable set-top box in order to watch the broadcast.
