IBC 2016: ASPEN Community highlights presence at show

The ASPEN Community is proud to announce that it will have a booth at this year’s IBC 2016. Located in the Hall 8.D12, the booth will host several members of the Community demonstrating interoperability of their ASPEN (SMPTE RDD37:2106) enabled products.  The interoperability demonstration at IBC 2016 is another accomplishment in the long list of achievements for the ASPEN Community.

ASPEN_CommunitySince the start of the year, major events, such as the Super Bowl, NBA All-Star, and Rio Game, have been produced using IP-based facilities using ASPEN. ASPEN is the only format to date that has been used in these large scale commercial productions.

The ASPEN Community was formed at IBC 2015 on the basis to promote the benefits of an open-format within IP-based broadcast.  The Community provides information exchange between end-users and manufacturers to adopt the open format framework across products and facilities. Membership in the Community has grown to include more than 50 members since its inception.

ASPEN is an open framework that enables independent flows for video, audio, and metadata in an IP-based broadcast and media facility. ASPEN expands on the MPEG-2 Transport Stream (IEC 13818-1 or ITU-T Rec. H.222.0) standard to include uncompressed UHD/3G/HD/SD video over TS.  The ASPEN framework also utilizes open standards for transporting audio (SMPTE ST 302) and metadata (SMPTE ST 2038). SMPTE 2022-2 is used to encapsulate the transport streams into IP.

The ASPEN Community will be promoting a roadmap towards a harmonization format that is under consideration for SMPTE 2110.  This effort ensures early adaptors and new facilities moving to IP today a clear and simple path to the standard when it becomes finalized.  This also ensures long term support of ASPEN.

Members that will be participating in the booth demonstration include: Abekas, Evertz, Hitachi Kokusai Electric Limited Inc., Matrox Electronic Systems Ltd., PacketStorm, Ross Video, Solid State Logic, Sony, Tektronix, and Vizrt.

Through the collaborative efforts of its experienced and knowledgeable members from all aspects of the broadcast workflow, the ASPEN Community is dedicated to providing a comprehensive end-to-end IP solution today.
