Samsung: Glasses-free 3D ‘not currently necessary’

TrustedReviews.com reports that Samsung has suggested that glasses-free 3D TVs are not currently necessary, claiming consumers are still more than happy to wear extra dimensional specs.

Despite having showcased its own glasses-free 3D TV concept at CES 2014 earlier this month, Samsung has stated that although it believes more consumers would adopt 3D if there was no need to wear special glasses, at present the technology is ‘not necessary’.

“Glasses are one of the areas that consumers may feel they would rather not have with the 3D experience, but consumers do like the 3D experience in its entirety,” Dilen Thakrar, Samsung’s Senior Product Manager for TV said speaking with TrustedReviews.

He added: “Possibly glasses-free could increase interest in 3D further, but I don’t think it’s necessary today.”

While removing the need for 3D glasses would make the home 3D experience more accessible to a wider audience, Thakrar has claimed that current 3D TV usage indicates the need for eyewear is not slowing the adoption of the technology.
