IBC 2016: Vislink launches new satellite data solution for broadcasting

With broadcasters facing an increased demand for worldwide content, but with inefficient infrastructure hampering their ability to deliver high quality video from different corners of the globe, Vislink has launched a new addition to its SATCOM portfolio.

image001-2The global technology business, which specializes in the wireless capture, delivery and management of high quality live video, has launched SatWare to easily extend studio workflows to the field. It allows reporters from around the world to work together, sharing files and video content as seamlessly as if they were in the studio together.

The SatWare computing platform delivers IP services across continents whilst making efficient use of satellite bandwidth. This means that file based workflow, data and voice communications can easily be accessed by the remote reporter over a WiFi connection to the Vislink satellite terminal of their choice.
SatWare, powered by XipLink, can provide up to 4Mbit/s of optimized bandwidth using SCPS – TP (Space Communications Protocol Specification) and streaming compression, in addition to the DVB-S2 video feed.  For instance a text file can be compressed by over fifty percent in real time, effectively doubling the channel capacity. For file types that are already compressed, the optimization algorithm will efficiently fill the bandwidth to make best use of the channel. This is the first time that SCPS-TP has been integrated into an MSAT and extends the studio network out to truly remote locations.
Out of the box, the unit provides direct access to the local network for smartphones, tablets and laptops without the need for any client network configuration. A system navigation/landing page provides quick access to the devices on the network.
As Mike Payne, CTO at Vislink explains: “With SatWare, reporters and producers can now feel like they are in the same room, even though they are on different continents. You could have a studio in London, a reporter in Boston and another in Mumbai. They would be able to talk, share files and use studio workflow as if they were physically together. The broadcast world just got smaller.”
SatWare works with the full range of Vislink SATCOM solutions such as the NewSwift or Mantis systems. The platform can be either physically integrated into a standard Vislink ½ width 1U rack chassis unit or into the body of a Vislink Mantis MSAT man-portable satellite terminal. The latter option makes this the lightest and smallest solution in the market.  There is no need to take up extra rack space or demand more power in order to access IP data services.
