BBC UHD Trial Underway

BroadbandTVnews.com reports that the BBC has begun its Ultra High Definition (4k) closed trial of World Cup 2014 from DTT transmitters in London, Manchester and Glasgow.

BBC R&D has partnered with Arqiva for the trial that will also run over high-speed broadband.

In a blog post Phil Layton, head of Broadcast & Connected Systems, explained the UHD production will be received in the UK from an H.264/AVC contribution satellite feed. For Both DTT and IP the partners are using Main Profile HEVC to compress the video to distribution.
