NeuLion (Booth SU9617) has announced that Broadcom’s family of Ultra HD solutions has been DivX Certified for HEVC Ultra HD, enabling support for high-quality 4K-video streaming on cable set-top boxes.

“By offering the world’s first chipset that is DivX Certified for HEVC to set-top–box manufacturers seeking 4K/Ultra HD playback, Broadcom has once again demonstrated its leadership in bringing new solutions to market,” said NeuLion CEO Kanaan Jemili, Ph.D. “The BCM7445 will enable set-top box manufacturers to provide incredibly high-quality 4K playback with remarkable efficiency, opening the door to next-generation video services powered by the NeuLion® Digital Platform.”

Says Joseph Del Rio, Broadcom product line director, Broadband Communications, “Broadcom was the first to market with Ultra HD silicon, and we can now add another first with support for DivX HEVC Ultra HD streaming from NeuLion. The highly efficient DivX HEVC technology is a value-add to our set-top–box partners who are looking to improve visual quality without sacrificing performance or dramatically increasing bandwidth consumption.”

The NeuLion Digital Platform leverages newly acquired DivX technologies, including the DivX Certified program for consumer-electronics devices and leading HEVC technology, powering encoding, secure delivery, and high-quality playback of premium sports and entertainment content up to 4K.

LG Electronics Agreement
NeuLion also has announced that it has renewed the license agreement with LG Electronics to integrate the DivX HEVC solution for 4K-video streaming across LG’s Ultra HD product line. The technology integration is being showcased at NAB 2015.

The license renewal between LG and NeuLion (which recently acquired DivX LLC) underscores the growing consumer demand for 4K content and devices. According to DisplaySearch, 4K/Ultra HD is starting to reach the masses, with global shipments of 4K-ready screens hitting 6.4 million in 2014. In the U.S. alone, sales of 4K Ultra HD TVs are expected to exceed 4 million units in 2015, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. Strategy Analytics forecasts that one in 10 U.S. homes will have a 4K/Ultra HD TV by 2016.

“Building on our strong position in OLED and 4K Ultra HD technologies, as well as LG’s Smart TV leadership with the webOS 2.0 platform, LG is committed to delivering an incredible 4K video experience to consumers,” says Dr. Nandhu Nandhakumar, SVP, technology partnerships and investments, LG Electronics. “One of the most efficient ways for us to do that is to work with a trusted, knowledgeable partner like NeuLion. We’re equipping our Ultra HD TVs with the NeuLion’s best-in-class DivX HEVC technology to deliver a superior 4K viewing experience.”

LG selected the DivX HEVC solution, including the DivX secure player technology and DivX DRM (digital-rights management), for its robust protection, ease of integration, and flexibility, which offers secure, MPEG-DASH–compliant live and on-demand streaming of OTT and TV Everywhere content and file-based playback of DivX HEVC video up to 4K. The DivX solution also supports an advanced media-playback feature set that includes multi-language subtitles, multiple audio tracks, smooth fast forward, quick scene navigation, and resume playback across devices.

WSL Partnership
In other news, NeuLion has announced that the World Surf League has chosen the NeuLion Digital Platform to distribute live and on-demand content over-the-top (OTT).

Together, NeuLion and WSL will deliver surfing footage coupled with interactive touchpoints, including super-slo-mo viewing, real-time highlights, and the ability to stream in 1080p HD and Ultra HD (4K).

“The mantra at the WSL has always been to bring the world’s best surfing to the largest possible audience with the very best experience,” says WSL CEO Paul Speaker. “NeuLion is a top-of-class partner, and we’re thrilled to be bringing the unparalleled adventure, competitive drama, and athleticism of professional surfing to the world with their help.”

With experience in servicing the NHL, UFC, NBA, and other world-class sports and entertainment properties, NeuLion will now showcase the WSL Championship Tour, an international 21-event series featuring the top male and female surfers.
