4K TV owners wonder: Where’s the programming?

sfchronicle.com reports that Guillermo Soughers began to second-guess himself after he brought home a 4K ultra high-definition TV, because he couldn’t find enough compelling programs to watch in that format.

“I’m not saying you shouldn’t replace your very old television with a brand-new 4K television if your old TV is too old to work,” the Newark resident said in an email. “But I’m also saying don’t rush out to get one if you don’t need to. I’m not sure it’s worth the price of admission.”

As Soughers’ experience suggests, sales of 4K TVs are outpacing availability of the type of programming that brings out their full potential. Indeed, they are rapidly becoming the only choice in stores, as high-definition TVs, which use an older technology, slide toward extinction.

The 4K screens have substantial benefits: They can provide four times more clarity than HDTVs, and combined with high dynamic range technology, they can display a greater range of colors, contrasts and brightness that makes video more vibrant.

But nearly all programming available on traditional broadcast and pay-TV networks, including the most popular TV series and live sporting events, are still presented in HDTV format or in the even older, less sharp standard definition format. The 4K programming is largely limited to streaming services like Netflix and Amazon, though even those services do not offer all their movies and series in the format.
