When Colorado Avalanche center Joe Sakic and the rest of the team takes to the ice it’s up to Scott Jensen, Senior Avid video editor, to ensure that fans keep on top of every power play. Fortunately, like the players and coaches, he has all the right gear.

“Kronke Sports Enterprises has provided my crew with all the tools we need and made Pepsi Center a killer place to work in,” he says.

The Pepsi Center opened in 2000 and, since its inception, has provided top-class in-venue entertainment. “We operate our own studio,” says Jensen “Everything is done in house.”

The arena’s Jumbotron displays all video, Chyron Duet LEX graphics and Apple One-click video effects and a team of 20 keep fans lively. “The scoreboard fires up the fans and that’s our basic goal because players feed off fans,” says Jensen. Highlights and replays are much more effective then playing the Chicken Dance or the Village People’s YMCA.

To create a fun atmosphere the crew produces their own video packages. The video footage is recorded onto four Sony Betacam SP camera decks and three Sony Betacam SX decks. Audio also plays a major role at Pepsi Center with Shure SM58 wireless microphones, among others.

As for editing, the Pepsi Center uses Avid Symphony and Avid Express for SD mastering. The systems provide uncompressed images and are quite effective according to Jensen.

The Pepsi center has not moved to HD yet because of the financial issues and the technical challenge of overhauling all the systems. “We’re a top broadcast facility without HD,” he says.
