Sports networks, leagues and other organizations looking for qualified video professionals have a new option via Wounded Marine Careers Foundation, a new organization that, with the help of Panasonic and Apple, is helping wounded Marine veterans from Iraq develop video editing and shooting skills.

“One of our marines told me that while he learned how to die for his country he never learned how to be disabled for it,” says Judith Paixao, co-founder of WMCF.

Paixao and others are looking to place the students in a career in TV production and SVG, along with Fox Sports and the NBA, met with WMCF to discuss ways students can be exposed to a career in sports and possibly become part of the sports production community. Paixao also says resumes of graduates are available for network, league and other sports organizations.

“Military personnel are a perfect fit for the sports broadcast community,” says Ken Kerschbaumer, SVG editorial director. “And the mission of WMCF is completely aligned with our recent efforts to expose students to a career in sports production or engineering. In fact, it closes an important loop as the students are disciplined and available for hire.”

The program, based in San Diego, CA, is an intense 10-week program and recently graduated its first class of 19 videographers. Students are provided with a Panasonic HVX200 HD camcorder, a 17-inch Apple Macbook Pro laptop with Final Cut Pro software, Adobe Photoshop, Final Draft and other professional editing software, and a digital SLR camera. Classes are led by USC Professor James Egan and others with an emphasis on learning how to shoot edit and, most importantly, tell a story with video. Students produce documentary films and short videos for broadcast.

The 5,000 sq. ft. center, located on the 20-acre film studio campus of Stu Segall Productions in San Diego, is next to the Miramar Marine Corps Air Base.
