WORKSHOPS, SESSION ONE

2:00-2:45
Track One
Born Digital: Building a Tapeless Archive
Today’s sports content is often “born digital” as a file, whether on an EVS server or tapeless acquisition format. As acquisition moves beyond videotape content creators find themselves figuring out how to build an archive. How does the lack of videotape impact the archive process and the role camera people, producers, and others play in building an archive? Who drives the decisions at the acquisition stage that will eventually impact digital archives? And how can leagues and networks get archivists and production personnel on the same page?
Moderated by: David Dukes, PGA Tour Productions, VP of Operations; Steve Hellmuth, NBA EVP, Operations and Technology; Scott Rinehart, NASCAR Media Group, Director of Internal Operations

2:00-2:45
Track Two
Server and Storage Technology Overview
One of the biggest decisions facing sports asset management professionals involves the long-term storage medium and format. What is the current state of server storage and how is it changing to make archiving easier and more cost efficient? Industry professionals share their experiences in making storage technology decisions and their wish lists for future developments.
Moderated by: Paul Koopman, Comcast, Director of Broadcast Engineering; Grant Nodine, NHL, VP, Technology; Mike Rokosa, NBA, VP of Engineering

2:45-3:00
Networking Break

3:00-3:45
Track One, Part Two
Born Digital: The Need for Speed
A digital archive is only as good as its ability to ingest, find, and distribute content quickly. How are networks and leagues improving the speed with which content can be logged, ingested, and distributed? What tools are useful in ensuring transfer speeds from media to disk-based storage are as quick as possible? And how can the logging process be streamlined to ensure mistakes are minimized?
Moderated by: David Dukes, PGA Tour Productions, VP of Operations; Steve Hellmuth, NBA EVP, Operations and Technology; Scott Rinehart, NASCAR Media Group, Director of Internal Operations

3:00-3:45
Track Two, Part Two
Backup for the Backup: Disaster Recovery

Once films and videotapes that document the history of a league are digitized a new issue arises: how do you back up the material and the metadata? How do you backup material as it’s recorded in the field? How do you maintain legacy logging information when the inevitable database merger needs to occur? And how can the backup system reflect on-going changes to the metadata database in the main archive facility?
Moderated by: Cindy Cortell, MLB Network, Director of IT; Paul Koopman, Comcast, Director of Broadcast Engineering; Grant Nodine, NHL, VP, Technology; Mike Rokosa, NBA, VP of Engineering

3:45-4:00
Networking Break

4:00-4:30
Closing Bell: Monetizing Your Assets
Building an archive is a costly exercise and a necessary one to preserve a sports organization’s history. But are there opportunities for monetization and a return on investment? Experts discuss new ideas in monetizing assets and how advances in digital media distribution will make it easier than ever to pave the way to profitability.
