Quantel Demonstrates Stereo3D Server

Quantel
gave a technology demonstration of its Stereo3D broadcast server at IBC 2008. The
server is based on Quantel’s existing sQ server platform and supports real-time
ingest and playout of multiple channels of stereo-HD content under the control
of Quantel’s own sQ Record and sQ Play applications.
The use
of AVC-Intra compression provides optimal use of disk storage while
guaranteeing the highest image quality, which is essential with stereo material
when inter-eye artifacts need to be minimized to ensure a high-quality viewing
experience.
The
Stereo3D server also taps the considerable video-processing power of sQ to
produce a side-by-side mode compatible with stereo monitors and uses today’s
single-feed HD SDI infrastructure for signal transport.
“We’ve
had tremendous interest from the many broadcasters who’ve attended the
worldwide Stereo3D road show we’ve been running over the last nine months,”
explains Quantel Worldwide Broadcast marketing manager Trevor Francis. “We’re
previewing this Stereo3D server technology at IBC in response to their
feedback, and we’re listening carefully to their reactions here so that we can
refine the product in readiness for the impending takeoff of 3D broadcasting.”
“This
Stereo3D server is just one of the components needed for the complete Stereo3D
production chain, which we’re committed to delivering in the very near future —
right when the industry is going to need it,” concludes Steve Owen, Quantel director of marketing.
