Shining Technology Showcases Smallest Tapeless Recorder
by | Sep 15, 2008 - 10:22:04 AM
Shining Technology, a provider of tapeless recording and conversion hardware for the video and
broadcast markets, released CitiDISK FlashMem, the world’s smallest, lightest solid-state
hard disk for digital video recording. Shining will offer demonstrations of
CitiDISK FlashMem throughout IBC at its Stand, # 7.D05. The company is
co-exhibiting there with its German distribution partner, Pekingstone
(Deutschland) GmbH.
Light on Weight, Heavy on Durability
A mere six-ounces, CitiDISK
FlashMem is Shining’s first entry in the solid-state format, extending its
award-winning, patent-protected CitiDISK family of tapeless recording storage
peripherals. CitiDISK FlashMem is also the first solid-state device of
its kind in this form factor to capture all digital video formats – DV, HDV and
HD.
“We’re thrilled once again to
share our innovations with the European market,” said Chris Wang, marketing
manager, Shining Technology. “There’s a growing appetite for flash-based
storage, and video is no exception. CitiDISK FlashMem continues our
tradition of moving in lockstep with the video, storage and technology
evolution – enabling us to provide customers with support for all DV formats.”
The battery-operated (at
least three-hour internal and at least six-hour external) CitiDISK FlashMem
easily attaches to virtually any FireWire-enabled DV, HDV or HD video
camera. The unit’s tapeless workflow saves videographers and editors
countless hours of digitizing videotapes. Instead, they can “recapture”
more creative and production time.
With CitiDISK FlashMem, users
seamlessly record their footage directly to digital video formats and access it
immediately for editing (compatible with widely-used NLE (non-linear editing)
software packages, including Final Cut Pro, Avid,
Canopus, Adobe, Matrox and Sony Vegas).
Solid-State, or flash memory,
offers several distinct advantages over other, conventional storage mediums,
and is becoming a preferred format – especially for high-end users. These
include:
·
No moving parts
·
Eco-friendly – 80% less power consumption than conventional hard drives
·
Optimized for extreme, hostile, rugged conditions
·
Performs well in high altitudes
Applications
CitiDISK FlashMem is a
valuable production tool for nearly any studio or field DV environment,
especially where instant playback and/or editing (Same-Day Editing) are
required. Examples include:
·
News & Sports (e.g., helicopter news shoots, car racing coverage)
·
Documentary (e.g., wilderness, cold weather, high-altitude shoots)
·
ENG
·
High-vibration shooting environments
“Shining Technology was one of the first
companies to put out a compact hard drive recorder. Now it is the first
to deliver a 32GB flash drive that holds more than 2 hours of DV or HDV [HD
support has since been added]. The big advantages to the recorder are its
weight and its power consumption,” noted the magazine in its July 2008 issue.
Pricing & Availability
The
CitiDISK FlashMem 32GB HDV model (yielding up to 140 minutes recording time) is
currently shipping worldwide. Shining expects to offer 64GB, 96GB and
128GB capacities by December 2008. Pricing starts at an MSRP of $1200.00
(US).
