Cisco today announced that SES AMERICOM is using Cisco MPEG AVC high-definition (HD) encoders to launch 40 additional HD channels on its IP-PRIME Internet Protocol television (IPTV) service. IP-PRIME is an end-to-end, turnkey entertainment distribution service that enables rural local exchange carriers (RLECs) in North America to offer a full and diverse menu of hundreds of SD and HD television channels to their subscribers. Some of China’s leading broadcasters will be using Vinten heads, pedestals, tripods and other accessories for their Olympics coverage in August this year. The Vinten equipment will be used for live OB productions from trucks on site at various Olympic venues as well as for studio based presenter-led analysis of the action. Read More

NASCAR is moving its headquarters to a new building next summer and by the time the boxes are unpacked, the company’s workflow will be entirely digital. As part of the move, NASCAR is digitizing all of its tape archives, relying on the DIVArchive system from Front Porch Digital to get it done. Read More


JVC unveiled on the show floor, the MR-HD200U. The camera combines solid state memory and long length hard disk recording. The MR-HD200U is a camera-mounted media recorder that attaches directly to any of JVC’s ProHD 200 Series camcorders. The MR-HD200U records on Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) solid state memory. The Snell & Wilcox Kahuna production switcher continues to gain traction in the local TV market as station groups like Raycom Media and Sinclair Broadcast transition to the board for future HD operations. That growing popularity could lay the groundwork for a move into sports production trucks as it will give the U.S. market an important component in embracing the Kahuna: technical directors who are comfortable working with the system. Sports networks, leagues and other organizations looking for qualified video professionals have a new option via Wounded Marine Careers Foundation, a new organization that, with the help of Panasonic and Apple, is helping wounded Marine veterans from Iraq develop video editing and shooting skills. “One of our students told me that while he learned how to die for his country he never learned how to be disabled for it,” says Judith Paixao, co-founder of WMCF. Akamai Technologies, Inc. is witnessing a trend toward higher definition (HD) video online.  Akamai, working closely with market intelligence firm Broadband Directions, recently conducted a survey of leading broadcast and cable TV networks, online publishers, sports leagues and social media sites. The results demonstrate that there is substantial near-term interest in launching HD broadband video, with a number of offerings already launched. Nearly 75 percent of respondents said they have plans to offer HD video content to their online audiences. In terms of timing, more than 80 percent of respondents with plans to offer HD content said they either already offered HD broadband video or intend to introduce it within the next 24 months. Fully half of respondents said they already offer it or intend to do so within the next 12 months.

The guys from Pace and the NBA returned to the content theater Monday, to wow 2008 visitors with Pace Fusion 3D technology. SVG who showcased 3D at last year’s NAB Show was happy the see the latest from the NBA. Mike Rokosa, NBA, VP of Engineering, along with Steve Hellmuth, NBA EVP, Operations and Technology, Dave Evans, director of broadcasting, Dallas Mavericks and Vince Pace, CEO, of Pace were on hand to demonstrate highlights of their 3D projects. Those included the 3-D HD telecast of the Mavs and Clippers, a playoff game with the Lakers and Suns and NBA All-Star weekend. Steve Stubelt, director sales & marketing Sony Solutions, SONY Electronics who moderated the panel said it best when he said; “I remember where I was when I first saw HD, I feel the same way about 3D.” Those who attended I think would happily agree with Steve.

Holophone continues to expand and enhance its lineup of surround sound microphone systems with three new products for NAB 2008. The PortaMic 5.1 is a basic surround mic for grabbing ambient sound. The N-CODE and D-CODE are portable Dolby ProLogic II units, and as the names suggest, an encoder and decoder. Read More


Thomson Kalypso HD and Kayak HD video production switchers are both getting some new features at this year's NAB. Kayak HD can now handle more sources from different formats than ever while a new SetDef option allows for up, down, or cross conversion to output formats. Read More


Sure Shot Transmissions is building a new 40-foot high-definition (HD) multiformat sports and entertainment production truck, based around a full complement of multiformat equipment from Thomson. The order includes six Thomson Grass Valley LDK 8000 HD cameras, a Kalypso HD 4 M/E production switcher, and a Concerto Series 32x32 compact HD/AES/analog router. Read More


Band Pro Film & Digital has teamed with optics manufacturer Schneider Kreuznach to produce a new line of HD C-mount lenses, specifically designed to enhance the performance of leading one-third inch chip HD cameras like the Iconix HD-RH1F and Toshiba IK-HD1. Read More


The 28th London Marathon took place yesterday (Sunday, April 13), with live coverage on BBC One television and the BBCi interactive service. The broadcast involved a total of 35 cameras, with some mounted on six motorbikes, two helicopters and an overhead circling aeroplane. Interactive 'red button' technology gave viewers who did not fancy braving the rain a number of options for a more comprehensive experience, including live individual footage of the Men's and Women's events and non-stop coverage of the finish, with replays of the end of the mini-marathon. On2 Technologies has licensed its Flix® Engine encoding and publishing platform to Eurosport, a leading on-line sports brand. By using Flix Engine, Eurosport will standardize its online video programming to On2 based video for Adobe Flash, and will migrate its archive programming across Europe and China to the On2 format. The Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC) says the broadcasting industry is on track to develop standards and launch services for mobile digital television (mobile DTV) in 2009. The group stated that recent Independent Demonstration of Viability (IDOV) trials showed that DTV-based mobile video technologies are feasible. Read More


At Sunday’s HD Radio press conference, NAB Chief David Rehr introduced the HD Radio Technology Advancement Task Force’s nearly completed development project. What’s been in the works for the past year is an “embedded exporter” that makes it cheaper and easier for broadcasters to jump on the HD Radio bandwagon. Read More


IBM ( NAB booth SU-3614) has introduced IBM Management Complexity Factor for Media, what the company calls the first media-industry specific methodology and toolset designed to dramatically improve digital media storage environments. "Media companies are facing a double-edged sword with the exponential rise in digital media storage needs, coupled with concerns about optimizing storage to be more efficient," says Steve Canepa, vice president of Media and Entertainment, IBM. Michael Phelps won’t be alone in his quest to dominate the Beijing Olympics as Panasonic, courtesy of a wide ranging deal with the IOC, the Beijing Organizing Committee and Beijing Olympic Broadcasting (BOB) will supply approximately 100 P2 HD and DVCPRO-HD camcorders, 250 DVCPRO-HD, P2HD, and DVCPRO50 studio decks, and more than 1,500 monitors. NAB marks the rollout of the complete Harris NewsForce HD/SD newsroom and sports production product family as well as the launch of the Harris Inscriber G7 integrated broadcast graphics system. Tim Thorsteinson, Harris Broadcast Communications president, says the company expects revenues for 2007 to top out around $650 million, more than doubling the company’s revenues in 2004, prior to a spate of acquisitions that transformed the company into one that offers everything from signal management equipment to traffic and billing systems. And a new interoperability lab promises that customers can rest assured that a new Harris-based infrastructure works properly not only within the Harris product family but also with third-party products. “This allows integrators to more easily install systems and put them together,” says Thorsteinson.

Chyron has broken a new boundary in online graphics creation by partnering its new AXIS online graphics system with the Associated Press. Chyron announced at NAB that the new collaboration will incorporate current news, entertainment and sports content directly from the AP into the AXIS system, offering producers the ability to immediately utilize AP content in their graphics templates. Chyron acquired AXIS Graphics in January 2008 and has since fully integrated Online’s feature set with its graphics portfolio for use in both online and television applications.

China Central Television has purchased 15 Infinity DMC 1000 HD digital media camcorders, which will be used by the Beijing department in the 1080i/50 HD or 720P formats as part of this summer’s coverage of the Olympic Games. To kick off NAB 2008, Omneon announced that NBC has chosen multiple Omneon elements to anchor the network’s coverage of the 2008 Olympic Games from Beijing, China.
