Frederick J. Ampel Frederick J. Ampel has been involved in the professional audio/video industry for 40 years.
Starting as a tape-duplicator operator at Cue Recording in NYC in 1967, his career since then has included work at professional levels in live/tour sound reinforcement, broadcast engineering and operations, audio/video production, album production and engineering, studio design and installation, sound and video system design, retail management, hardware marketing and sales, and equipment design and development, as well as market analysis and planning.
From 1983 through 1991 he was founding Editor/Editorial Director of Sound & Video Contractor (S&VC) and editorial director for RE/P after it’s acquisition in 1989.
Since 1992 he has been the developer of and then the principal editorial consultant for NewBay Media publications including Systems Contractor News, Residential Systems anda contributor to Pro Sound News. He regularly contributes opinion and analysis columns and features to these publications as well as Live Sound International and ProSound Web, which are part of the Huge Universe Group. He has been a contributing columnist to the NSCA and CEDIA Newsletters, and CABA’s IHomes&Buldings magazine.
In late 1991 he founded, a Consultancy serving the professional and consumer audio/video industry worldwide. That firm provides services in the marketing, market research, worldwide market development, product design and development, technology assessment and related areas to companies and professional organizations worldwide.
Technology Visions also provides extensive acoustic and electronics related training classes; specialized product specific training for manufacturers, and seminars and tutorial classes for CEDIA, NSCA, InfoComm and The Audio engineering Society. Technology Visions also supplies special event development and management for those organizations and IoA(UK), SCIF(UK) . Mr. Ampel has also provided these services to other events worldwide.
Technology Visions has also completed more than 60 ultra-high end private listening and viewing environment projects across the United States, the Middle East and Europe between since 1994 providing design and project management services.
Mr. Ampel holds a BA in Literature/Music from Long Island University and a MS in Television Arts & Sciences from Boston University. He has been a member of the Audio Engineering Society since 1968.
He and his company are also members of the Institute of Acoustics [IoA] (UK), Acoustical society of America, Sound & Communications Industries Federation [SCIF], NSCA, and CEDIA, the AES, CABA and other professional organizations
He has served on the Education Committee for CEDIA, was the Chairman of and then a member of the Education Steering Committee for NSCA . He was also chairman of CEDIA's Task Force on Certifications and Testing, developing its first tests to qualify employee technical capabilities.
He was the principal editor for the 1997 re-working of CEDIA's Home Theatre Manual. He regularly lectures at AES, NSCA, INFOCOMM, CEDIA, and international conferences and symposia worldwide. He has been published in the Proceeding's of the IoA, AES, NSCA, InfoComm and numerous other industry journals and publications and has contributed more than 50 technical papers and numerous articles and columns to publications worldwide.
He resides in Overland Park, Kansas with his wife and two highly educated Scottish Terriers, who are both PhD’s.
