EGT helps deliver hyper-local sports content

Cable operators and telcos looking to deliver hyper-local sports content have a new tool: EGT’s Head End Micro.

The encoder system can encode, multiplex, modulate and convert up to nine community channels (which could range from high-school sports content or even security cameras) into low-bandwidth digital signals that can be sent out specific neighborhoods or multiple dwelling units.

HEMi encodes local programming into MPEG2 and then multiplexes the signals to form a new Multi-Program Transport Stream (MPTS). It then modulates and up-converts the MTPS to be re-inserted back into the RF cable spectrum, sending the local channels throughout the MDU or closed community.

Both cable operators and telcos are beginning to eye local sports content as a way to not only differentiate their product from competitive multi-channel distributors but also as a way to more easily renew franchisee agreements.
