Avid Systems Enable Broadcasters to Deliver World Cup Coverage from Start to Finish

Amid elated chants of Forza Azzurri! and frustrated groans of French expletives, broadcasters worldwide celebrated their own victory, surviving the month-long labor of bringing extensive cross-platform World Cup coverage into homes, offices, and mobile devices around the world. When the final Italian penalty kick hit the back of the French net, Avid Systems was one of many companies with plenty to celebrate. Throughout the tournament, Avid provided digital content creation solutions to a range of broadcasters, allowing delivery of up-to-the-minute coverage to millions of viewers across the globe. Highlights of Avid s World Cup content solutions include the BBC s first-ever tapeless HD workflow, an arsenal of equipment used by TV Azteca, and the servers required to create on-air graphics for Televisa.

Using a mix of Avid systems, BBC Resources Post Production deployed its first completely tapeless high definition workflow during the World Cup. BBC Resources relied on a combination of Avid Media Composer Adrenaline, Avid Unity, Avid AirSpeed, and Symphony Nitris systems to share content across multiple geographies. The network also produced daily highlights packages in Avid DNxHD, the master-quality encoding format that maintains the quality of 10-bit uncompressed HD images at the bandwidth of SD files.

TV Azteca relied on a broad array of Avid products to provide HD coverage of the tournament, including an Avid Unity shared-storage system; multiple seats of Avid Xpress Pro software; a range of Media Composer Adrenaline systems for producing Avid DNxHD media; one Symphony Nitris workstation; and a Digidesign Pro Tools HD digital audio workstation. TV Azteca delivered live game broadcasts and highlights for sports shows produced on location in Germany and distributed to audiences in Mexico, Central America, and the United States.

Televisa, the broadcast division of Grupo Televisa, S.A., the largest media company in the Spanish-speaking world, deployed three Avid Deko 3000 character generators and two Thunder graphics servers to create on-air graphics for live coverage and news highlights packages. The graphics systems were used in conjunction with Media Composer Adrenaline and Symphony Nitris systems to assemble the programs before broadcasting them to audiences in Mexico.
