WXYZ Detroit adds JVC Pro HD cameras to arsenal

WXYZ-TV, the ABC affiliate in Detroit, MI, has purchased five GY-HD250U Pro HD cameras for the station’s HD electronic newsgathering (ENG). The station first used the GY-HD250 cameras as part of its HD coverage of the November elections. The JVC cameras were used at the stations “command center,” an additional studio to help cover the election, switching between the station’s main studio and the command center throughout the election coverage.

WXYZ-TV upgraded their local news coverage to HD on October 4, making them the first station in Michigan to broadcast local news in HD.

“We’re extremely pleased about the quality of HD footage we captured on election night using the GY-HD250U,” said Ray Thurber, Director of Engineering, WXYZ-TV. “We look forward to expanding the use of the GY-HD250 for the station’s ENG needs. We are excited to offer our viewers top quality HD coverage of live local news and professional sporting events.”

“As the first broadcaster to take delivery of GY-HD250U ProHD camcorders we’re delighted Scripps Howard’s flagship station in Detroit WXYZ-TV chose JVC cameras for HD production and HD ENG remotes,” said Lawrence Librach, Assistant Vice President, business development for broadcast and entertainment, JVC Professional Products Company. “By successfully mixing HD imagery from our GY-HD250U’s with WXYZ studio cameras on election night underscores the new level of performance attained by our newest ProHD camcorders equipped with JVC’s exclusive wide analog front end A/D 14bit converter.”

According to Thurber, the GH-HD250s complement WXYZ-TV’s existing nonlinear workflow, which made the station’s transition to JVC cameras completely seamless.
