Daktronics lights up Friday nights for S.D. high school

James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C., took Rebels football to an entire new level this past season with the addition of an integrated video and scoring system, designed and manufactured by Daktronics Inc. of Brookings, S.D. “This was a very magical year using that scoreboard even though we didn’t end up with a championship,” said Rebels Touchdown Club President Tony McAbee. “When you make the turn into the school, there is a big monster scoreboard in the sky. It is a tremendous asset for our program. We are delighted to have great sponsors that made that happen.”

Byrnes High School raised the bar for football scoring systems in South Carolina with the state’s first state-of-the-art high school football display that presents live game footage as well as scoring information. The unique display features a ProStar video display with the capability to show live and recorded video, colorful animation and vivid graphics. The system allows fans to view hard-to-see plays, while keeping up to date with player and team stats. The system also provides creative ways for the Rebels Touchdown Club to promote its sponsors.

The video display measures approximately 12 feet high by 16 feet wide with full-color pixels on 23 millimeter (.9”) center-to-center spacing. The display uses red, green and blue (RGB) light emitting diode (LED) technology to present images and information with wide-angle visibility and incredible brightness in more than 4.3 trillion shades of color. Daktronics ProStar technology offers a long lifetime with minimal maintenance and low power consumption, providing value and excitement for years to come.

Incorporated into the system are customized Daktronics All Sport scoring sections. Advanced LED digit technology allows for excellent visibility from every seat during both day and night games. The scoreboard displays home and guest scores, game time, DOWN, TO GO, BALL ON, QTR. (quarter) and T.O.L. (time outs left). Also incorporated into the unique design are static and rotating sponsor panels.

The video and scoring display system is supported by the powerful and versatile Venus and All Sport controllers, which are able to combine the video and scoring elements, as well as the proven V-Link video processor.

McAbee said he looks forward to using the display in the 2007 season. “It’s going to be a tough year with three major games and we are going to get the max out of that scoreboard,” he said.
