Approval of Atlanta Braves sale near

The sale
of the Atlanta Braves from Time Warner to Liberty Media is pending and could be
approved by Major League Baseball’s owners as early as Wednesday.

The
complicated stock-for-franchise deal has a deadline of midnight ET because of a
change in the federal tax code affecting such transactions. That change occurs
on Friday.

Thus, if
approved by the MLB’s executive council on Wednesday, the 30 owners will meet
in a special late afternoon session to vote on the deal. All the owners or
their representatives are in town this week for the second quarterly meeting of
the year, one that has become a May staple at MLB’s

New York offices.

“Hopefully the

Atlanta sale will be confirmed,”
Commissioner Bud Selig told USA Today on Wednesday. “That’s the top item
on our agenda.”
