Canon cameras keep eye on Kauffman Stadium renovation

By Andrew Lippe
PTZ Network Cameras from
Canon are giving sports fans in Kansas
City a bird’s eye view of renovations made to Kauffman
Stadium, the home ballpark of Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals. Canon
VB-C50iR pan/tilt/zoom network video cameras are being used by the Kansas City
Royals to oversee security practices and view stadium renovation status. Digital
Planet oversaw the installation of two PTZ cameras installed around Kauffman
stadium. These cameras are being streamed on the internet to fans. Fans can
view updates to Kauffman stadium on the Kansas City Royals website .

“The idea was to get
a bird’s eye view of what is happening on- site and view it from anywhere”
says Devin Mudd, president of Digital Planet. Digital Planet is a Detroit-based
technology and consulting firm that has worked on four previous stadium
projects in the past, beginning with Detroit’s
Ford Field Stadium. Hunt Construction Group was lead contractor on the Ford
Field design and asked Digital Planet to design a Web cam for them to watch the
stadium creation so that HCG execs in Indianapolis
and Arizona could keep
tabs on construction.

After the success of the
Ford Field project Digital Planet was then hired to provide wireless technology
at the home of the Detroit Tigers, Comerica Park, and
then installed wireless camera systems at the new Busch Stadium, home to the
St. Louis Cardinals. When Alberici Constructors and Hunt Construction
approached Digital Planet about renovations to Kauffman Stadium, Canon was the
obvious choice again because of optical quality and design.
“Canon cameras are
really rugged,” says Mudd. “They offer accessibility as the cameras
can be controlled from anywhere. The cameras can be seen by multiple viewers
and offer multiple image locations. Digital Planet installed two Canon cameras
in domes to monitor the renovations. Cameras are mounted on light poles, with
one pole facing Kauffman Stadium and the other one on a pole near Arrowhead
Stadium facing the ballpark. “We control the cameras from Michigan,”
adds Mudd.
Every 30 minutes images
are updated and fans can view images from that day’s progress. “This is a great
user experience where fans can truly see what their favorite team is up to,”
adds Mudd.

Canon PTZ Network Video
cameras were also installed in Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the National
Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs. SVG will have the Chiefs perspective in
an upcoming newsletter.
