The Hollywood Reporter reports that more than 28 million Germans tuned in Monday to watch the national squad beat
Austria 1-0 in
the first round of the Euro Cup 2008 soccer championship, setting a new ratings record for
the tournament. Public broadcaster ARD scored a 77% share for the evening’s primetime event.

Things looked even better in the key 14-49 demographic, where 12.4 million
viewers, a 79% share, caught the match.

It was a similar story across the border in Austria, where 2.2 million viewers,
72% of the audience, watched their home team get knocked out of the tournament
on public channel ORF.
