Salisbury College Goes HD With Panasonic P2

By Andrew Lippe

Panasonic HD gear is bringing Salisbury University, a Division III college in Salisbury, MD, into the HD world as the school recently opened an 18,500 sq. ft. media center, laying the groundwork for future coaches shows and highlights in HD.

The multi-disciplinary space allows students and faculty from different university programs to work collaboratively on digital media projects. “In academia, we work in silos and that is not reflective of real world,” says Jerome Waldron, Salisbury University, chief information officer.

The Media Center has two production studios with four Panasonic AK-HC3500 HD studio cameras. The university is also using a Panasonic AG-HPX500 P2 HD camera and two AG-HVX200 P2 HD handheld cameras. Fifteen video editing rooms and five audio editing rooms with Avid and Apple editing software are also on hand and the department is still getting used to the new space.“[Working in our old space] was like operating out of the trunk of a car,” says Waldron.

Coaches are also adjusting to the new space as football coach Sherman Wood and lacrosse head coach Jim Berkman have been to the studio and are preparing for future coaching shows. “The lower cost of equipment is allowing Division III schools to be in a national spotlight,” says Waldron. “If we can’t do a whole game we can do clips, highlights or audio podcasts with coaches inside the studio.”

Salisbury is currently not producing any live games because the school does not have a production truck. In the past the school has produced soccer and football games and delivered them via fiber connections.
