NYC Department of Ed Teams Up With ‘ESPN The Magazine’ on Sports High School

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s commitment to modernize the city’s outdated vocational and trade schools got a jump-start this week. Given that ESPN and outdated are not often used in the same sentence, the city’s newest partnership effectively moves those schools into the modern era.
ESPN The Magazine has teamed up with the New York City Department of Education to create a new high school focusing on the business side of sports.
The Business of Sports School, BOSS, will open in Midtown Manhattan in September with 81 ninth-grade students, who will have sports woven into their high school curriculum. Real-world skills will be emphasized through hands-on training at internships with such companies as ABC Sports, VitaminWater, and
ESPN The Magazine, which has made a commitment to help develop the school, not operate it.
“Reports suggesting ESPN is launching a high school are overstated,” reads a statement from ESPN. “
ESPN The Magazine has made a non-financial commitment to help develop a curriculum, in addition to providing other volunteer-based support.”
A business focus will weave into core classes like English and math, but students will be trained in careers that can feed numerous industries, not exclusively sports.
