Grass Valley in the News at WPVI-TV Philadelphia

ABC-owned WPVI-TV Philadelphia is using Grass Valley HD technology and systems for its brand-new digital news-production facility, including gear that will handle system infrastructure, digital news production, live production, master control, and signal routing.

WPVI says the new Grass Valley systems being put in place will support a comprehensive file-based production workflow for its local newscasts and other programs broadcast in the 720p HD format.

Grass Valley gear being used includes a fully redundant Ignite HD integrated production system, complete with a 4 M/E Kayak HD production switcher; a K2 master-control server system with 1,000 hours of storage; a BaseCamp browse system (tightly integrated with a PathFire Digital Media Gateway system); a storage-area network featuring mirrored K2 Summit servers and 1,000 hours of mirrored HD storage; the Aurora news-production platform, including Aurora Ingest, 75 seats of Aurora Browse, and Aurora Play software modules; nine Grass Valley Aurora Edit workstations; and one-dozen EDIUS nonlinear editing workstations.

The station became the first in its market to broadcast local news in HD in 2006.
