Comcast Has Big Plans for 3D

Comcast will aim to become the biggest 3D-programming provider in the country, according to Derek Harrar, SVP and GM of video services for the cable provider.

Comcast currently offers anaglyph 3D versions of the movie The Final Destination on demand (in both SD and HD) and has placed a major focus on developing it 3D capabilities and programming

Multichannel News reports that the MSO currently employs the more primitive anaglyph format for 3D content because it can be viewed on any set with compatible 3D glasses. However, Comcast has plans to implement more advanced formats, such as the frame-compatible 3D format, in the near future.

Comcast Media Center provided the signals for the CableLabs’ demonstration of 3D content over existing cable plant at this fall’s Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers Cable-Tec Expo, and expects to begin offering frame-compatible 3D content later this year.
