Level 3 Goes Uncompressed for CBS Sports Super Bowl Transport

This weekend’s Super Bowl XLIV in Miami will feature an industry first as CBS Sports uses a new fiber-optic network from Level 3 to deliver uncompressed video from Sun Life Stadium to CBS Studio Headquarters in New York. Level 3 has connected Sun Life Stadium in Miami to its network and the Super Bowl transmission will be the culmination of a series of tests this past season.
“This year, we worked with Level 3 to test uncompressed HD feeds in the delivery of various NFL games and have been impressed with the results,” said Bob Mincieli, director of Broadcast Operations at CBS. “Our mission is to deliver the very best possible sports viewing experience for our audience – especially for the biggest game of the year – and the new technology that Level 3 offers will allow us to do just that.”
According to The Denver Post, the Colorado-based company and CBS conducted similar tests with Denver Broncos games this season at Invesco Field at Mile High.
During the 2009 football season, Level 3 worked closely with the league and broadcasters to provide video transmission for every regular season and playoff game, totaling more than 5,600 total feeds.
