Hiestand: NCAA Tourney Expansion Would Cheapen College Hoops

Michael Hiestand of USA Today argues that expanding the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament from 65 to 96 teams would only cheapen college basketball and provide minimal returns for the organization.  Rumors are flying concerning the NCAA opting out of the final three years of its current TV deal with CBS and possibly inking a new deal with a reformatted 96-team tournament.

According to Hiestand, showing teams that wouldn’t make the tournament in its present format likely would produce smaller ratings and therefore only provide mild benefits to the NCAA and its TV partner.
