NAB Preview: Production Truck Roundup

Alliance Productions

Alliance Productions will hold its annual party at 4-8 p.m. on Monday April 12 at Piero’s Restaurant, across from the Las Vegas Convention Center. It’s the perfect opportunity to say hello to the folks from Alliance and also meet with the wide variety of member companies that provide remote-production services across the country.

Party attendees can also learn about recent Alliance Productions activities and projects like the NFL Network’s production of the NFL Combine that was held in Indianapolis last month.

All Mobile Video

All Mobile Video will roll out a 53-ft. double-expando 3D-capable production truck at NAB. The trailer will be similar in design to the company’s current Titan unit, with a 3G routing infrastructure, Studer Vista 8 audio console, Sony MVS-8000G production switcher, SRW recording decks, and HD monitors. The 3D difference is courtesy of 3ality Digital 3D rigs using Sony HDC-1500 cameras.

All Mobile Video’s unit will officially be the second 3D-capable unit to hit the road, following the debut of NEP’s unit last fall. And like NEP, All Mobile Video will use the unit to experiment with different approaches to 3D productions and equipment needs.

Corplex

Corplex will be exhibiting its new Chromium HD mobile truck, the third HD truck in Corplex fleet. The 53-ft. expanding trailer, paired with a 53-ft. support unit, is wired for 18 Sony HDC 1500 cameras and 10 six-channel EVS servers plus four-channel EVS Spotbox and houses Evertz routing and distribution equipment, Grass Valley switcher, and Calrec audio console. It features a platform and layout similar to that of Iridium, which was exhibited at NAB in 2008, building on many of the successful industry innovations included on Iridium and capable of handling single-day set/shoot/strike shows as well as large multiday compound-event work.

CP Communications

CP Communications’ newest addition to its fleet of production trucks, the 5.1 Digital Sub Mix trailer, features the StageTec mixing platform. The trailer is outfitted with a digital 5.1 mixing platform using Aurus surfaces coupled with a NEXUS router, which includes SDI, HD, and 3GHD embedders and de-embedders, Dolby E, and an infinite amount of MADI distribution that only Stagetec delivers. The trailer will be available to see at the Alliance Productions Party from 4 to 8 p.m. on Mon. April 12 at Piero’s restaurant, across the street from the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Frontline Communications

Frontline Communications hits NAB with two new satellite vehicles: PACSAT Sprinter Combo SVN and NT-7. Sprinter is the first satellite vehicle with a dual-band AvL antenna with “foldable” wings, a requirement given the vehicle’s smaller body. It also has solid-state power amplifiers for both C-band and Ku-band services (another first) and delivers HD signals via MPEG-4 compression.

The NT-7 is the industry’s first dual-band AvL 2.4 with a dual-band antenna, mounted TWTAs, and MPEG-4 compression in HD. Those features save satellite bandwidth, resulting in significant cost savings for HD sports transmission.

NEP

NEP hit Vegas with its top-of-the-line mobile production units at booth OE2319.

PACSAT

PACSAT will be displaying a state of the art, Hybrid C/Ku analog, standard definition or HD uplink platform housed in a Sprinter van. Featuring a 2.4 meter AVL antenna, plus C and KU PARADISE DATACOM — SSPAs (Solid State Power Amplifiers) capable of transmitting in 4:2:0 and/or 4:2:2  MPEG 2 & MPEG 4 in DVB-S or DVB-S2 using ADTEC encoders and PARADISE DATACOM high grade digital modulators.

Unlike other similar size C band uplinks, this unit can transmit in either KU or C band (on demand) by changing the antenna’s feedhorn.  The SSPAs were specifically designed to accommodate multi-path transmissions.  They contain internal redundancy for the electronics, RF modules and power supplies. Amongst numerous basic functions, this platform will be able to process ATSC close captioning, display HD waveform characteristics (eye pattern timing and jitter, Gamut and luminance levels) pass, decode and monitor embedded audio in AES or Dolby-E formats and be able to accept, analyze, record and process (for transmission) external ASI streams.
