After IPL Success, Google Views YouTube as Outlet for Live Sports Streaming

Following higher-than-expected viewership on YouTube for its Indian Premier League streaming last month, Google has announced plans to carry “more live events and live sports.” YouTube, a Google subsidiary, streamed 60 IPL matches live worldwide and showed matches in the U.S. 15 minutes after they concluded. About 50 million viewers tuned in to YouTube’s I.P.L. channel, 25 percent more than Google had expected when they signed the deal in January. Approximately 40 percent of those viewers were outside India.

The New York Times reports that Google will now look to capitalize on these gains by pursuing future sports rights; a lofty goal when considering the reluctance of sports leagues to cannibalize profits that come from traditional broadcasters.
