ACC Latest To Embrace HD Instant Replay
Story Highlights
DVSport continues to ink deals that will move college-football instant replay into the clear realm of HD. The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) will deploy DVSport HD replay technology at all 12 of its schools. The Big 10 and Pac 10 have also signed up, and the MAC will use DVSport SD technology during the 2010 season.
“A large portion of the decision came down to workflow with our product,” says DVSport COO Keith Lowe. Among the improvements are a better zoom functionality, easier manipulation of images, and the ability to tie the instant-replay system in the stadium to a system at the conference office.
“We’re marrying information and data, something we’ve done on the coaching side, to enhance the replay system,” he adds. The new system also makes it easier for the operator to quickly flip back and forth between replay angles.
DVSport software resides on a proprietary third-party server at each stadium, typically in a replay booth located on the press level. That server is connected via fiber to the TV trucks broadcasting the game, and the broadcast feed is passed from the truck to the server. A 19-in. monitor with a touchscreen interface is used to control the server, and replays are displayed on two 24-in. HD monitors.
“The replay displays the same production as the viewer sees at home,” says Lowe, “and, once there is a stoppage of play, the technician has an open line of communication.”
The ACC has used DVSport SD replay technology for five seasons, and ACC Commissioner John Swofford says the conference used HD instant replay during the last two championship games. “We feel that, by integrating it into the regular season, we are providing our officials with the best technology available, which ensures the integrity of the game and is in the best interest of the coaches, players, officials, and fans.”
The ACC was the first BCS conference to use the DVSport HD replay system for post-season play.
“We believe DVSport’s HD replay system enhances the officials’ review process for every play and provides a seamless system that accurately supports the on-field officials,” says Doug Rhoads, coordinator of football officiating for the ACC. “The clarity provided by the use of high-definition video will enhance our officiating program and ensure we remain out in front of any technology that makes our game-day product better for everyone.”
