Grass Valley Dyno Finds Believers in NFL Teams

The Grass Valley Dyno replay system has passed the 150-user mark and, according to the company, is making inroads into one of its core markets: sports venues and teams. The NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, and Miami Dolphins are using the system, as are the NBA’s Portland Trailblazers.

The K2 Dyno replay system comprises two components: a server (the K2 Summit production client or the K2 Solo media server) and the K2 Dyno replay controller.

“Features like metadata tags and ratings of material used throughout the workflow are valuable for repurposing of content,” says Ed Cassacia, Grass Valley director of product marketing for servers. “One of the key things in creating a personalized experience is metadata tagging, and, with Dyno, that happens as soon as the content is created.”

Dyno debuted several features at IBC, including an interface with a storage area network (SAN). Content can be recorded to the SAN and replayed, edited, searched, and played out without the time-consuming need to transfer files to the various individual workflow departments.

“It’s a true file-based workflow,” says Cassacia, adding that record and play latency on the SAN is identical to recording and playback from the K2 drive.

Along with SAN integration is Dyno PA (Production Assistant), designed to help automate functions by transferring content automatically based on established rules. Content can be managed in K2 server bins and transferred or streamed to other storage devices, and network control of any playout or ingest channel is also available.

The system also continues to ride the growing popularity of touch-based interfaces.

“That is an advantage to us, and it makes it very easy to learn to use Dyno,” says Cassacia. “At a MotoGP race in Indianapolis, we were able to complete training in an hour.”

MotoGP, he adds, has become a valuable partner in the Dyno rollout. All of rightsholder Dorna’s K2 Dyno replay systems use the four-channel K2 Summit and four K2 Summit production clients. Four K2 Dyno replay systems are in use in the MotoGP production truck, recording 18 cameras plus two super-slo-mo cameras, and K2 Summit 600-GB drives provide 15 hours of recording on 6×1 systems.

Cassacia says of Dorna, “They are a wonderful partner and have been invaluable for us in stretching the capabilities.”
