Nevion Transports Video — in Any Format, Over Any Network, Across Any Distance

The Sports Video Group is pleased to welcome Nevion as its newest premier sponsor. Nevion provides solutions for transporting video in any format, over any network, and across any distance. These include its Ventura family of carrier-class solutions for video-transport–service providers, the Flashlink series of fiber transport, signal-processing and -distribution products, and the VikinX range of video- and audio-routing solutions. The company also has an integrated family of network-management and -control solutions.

“We’ve joined SVG to help us build closer relationships with existing and new customers in the sports industry,” says EVP of Global Marketing John Glass. “Our goal is to help customers overcome the challenges they face in transporting their valuable video content — whatever their requirements”

Nevion is the legacy of two video-transport providers: Network Electronics, a Norway-based provider of broadcast solutions and inventor of the ultra-compact, ultra-low-power routing switcher; and Video Products Group, a California-based company focused on solutions for telecommunications service providers. Nevion also has offices in Singapore, Dubai, and the UK.

Its solutions are relied on to transport video from a variety of major sporting events, including the Super Bowl, the Olympics, NBA games, NFL games, NCAA college football, English Premier League soccer, Spain’s La Liga soccer, and Wimbledon tennis. The company works with major sports broadcasters and the large telcos that provide them with video-transport services.

For the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, Nevion’s Ventura solutions provided JPEG 2000 compression and transport of live video over more than 30 HD links from multiple sporting venues to the European Broadcasting Union’s International Broadcasting Center in Vancouver, while the company’s DataMiner solution was used to monitor and manage the links. Nevion also transported video for the live 3D broadcast of The Masters golf tournament at Augusta, GA.

Elsewhere, Nevion’s Flashlink fiber-optic solutions were used at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, providing uncompressed HD connectivity over 15 km in real time. And, for the 2010 Asian Games in China, the second-largest multisport event after the Olympic Games, Nevion’s Flashlink fiber solutions transported live video from 53 competition venues to the International Broadcast Center in the Asian Games Town.

“We’re seeing a lot of interest from sports organizations in 3D video and video over IP as well as our JPEG 2000 solutions for maximizing video throughput while preserving video quality,” says Glass. “We look forward to working closely with the SVG community to enhance the quality, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of sports-video transport.”
