SVG Year in Review: January

The year began with a bang for the sports technology world when, within the first few days of 2010, ESPN announced its ESPN 3D channel and committed to producing 85 3D events before July 2011. With Sony on board as the network’s official sponsor, there was talk at CES that 3D would hit cable sooner than later, but many manufacturers met ESPN’s news with a business-as-usual attitude.

Other news coming out of CES included the success of Panasonic’s HD 3D camcorder and the announcement of Panasonic’s sponsorship of several DIRECTV 3D channels, but SVG raised its own 10 questions to ponder regarding the future of 3D.

January also saw SVG return to Los Angeles for a West Coast production summit, this one focused on going inside 3D production. SportsTechLA attendees learned about BSkyB’s 3D launch, heard the results of a CEA study putting sports in 3D’s driver’s seat, and heard predictions that the 3D adoption curve would outpace that of HD.
