Engineering Emmy Investigations
Story Highlights
The Engineering Awards Committee of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has voted to investigate 17 technologies for possible Emmy-award recognition. The fact that investigations are taking place does not guarantee an award (there can also be more than one award per technology).
The two questions that must be answered in each investigation are:
1. Does this technology deserve Emmy-award recognition?
and, if so,
2. Who should get the award(s)?
The primary criterion for question 1 is whether the engineering developments or standards involved “materially have affected” television.
Here is a list of the 17 technologies with their committee designations:
11-2 – real-time presentation of broadcast content to mobile-phone devices
11-4 – pioneering development of large-scale content-delivery networks (CDNs) for IP video delivery
11-5 – local cable ad insertion technology
11-7 – multi-bitrate encoding / adaptive-bitrate streaming for delivery of television programming
11-8 – development and commercialization of MPEG-4 HD to MPEG-2 HD real-time transcoding commercial digital satellite receivers
11-9 – short time delay in TV broadcasting
11-12 – pioneering development and commercialization of integrated aspect-ratio conversion within a production switcher
11-15 – interrupted foldback (IFB)
11-16 – system for automated migration of media assets
11-17 – pioneering development of large-venue large-screen direct-view color video displays
11-21 – pioneering development and deployment of active format description and aspect-ratio control technologies and systems
11-22 – development of integrated deployable systems for live reporting from remote environments
11-31 – standardization of loudness metering for use in broadcast audio
11-33 – pioneering on-screen electronic program guides
11-35 – pioneering development of event-driven control-room automation systems for production of live television shows, encompassing full control of robotic cameras, audio, graphics, and video sources
11-43 – professional portable tapeless acquisition on low-cost optical media
11-46 – removable solid-state memories for video camcorders
If you have any information that might assist the investigative subcommittees with their work, please send it to me no later than May 31, 2011, and I will forward it to them.
