Digital Dish: Turner’s PGA Championship, ESPN’s X Games Pull in Record Online Audiences

PGA.com’s online coverage of the PGA Championship first round at the Atlanta Athletic Club on Thursday, featuring two marquee group pairings, set new single day records with 2,100,000 unique users (up 22% vs. 2010) and 974,000 live streams (up 9%). PGA.com followed the two marquee groups of Tiger Woods, Davis Love III and Padraig Harrington, along with Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke and Charl Schwartzel. The two pairings helped drew 52.7 million page views (up 28%) for Thursday’s coverage.  Mobile traffic also saw significant growth with 1.1 million WAP page views (up 65% vs. 2010). …During X Games 17, held in Los Angeles July 28-31, 37 million people tuned into television coverage across ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN on ABC – up 6% from last year (35 million). The event’s successes also included the highest attendance in seven years as well as record usage on ESPN3.com and the company’s other digital platforms, including ESPN.com/action, XGames.com, mobile devices, Facebook, Twitter, and more. The X Games 17 app on iOS and Android mobile devices averaged 46,000 daily unique visitors during the X Games, while unique visitors to the ESPN mobile Web averaged 3.7 million per day.
