Quantel Chosen for Canada’s First Mobile Post Facility
Story Highlights
Cosmic Post, an on-set media solutions company, has purchased a Quantel Pablo color correction and finishing system to sit at the heart of its brand new, mobile post production facility. This is the first mobile digital 2D and 3D support and finishing facility in Canada, conceived to provide producers with the highest quality post production facilities on set, all housed within a 40 foot air-conditioned trailer.
“Post is changing – it’s all about making decisions on set today; this is where post is heading – this is the future,” said Cosmic Post founder Paul St Amand. “As a producer, it’s a no brainer to bring post on set. It’s a huge advantage to be able to walk right off the set and start working with the day’s footage straight away, so directors can see the results of their shoot in context. They simply sit down with our Pablo artist and work with the images projected onto our 7ft silver screen via our top of the line Christie 2210 projector using RealD.
“We chose Quantel because it’s quite simply the best for quality and has great stereo tools too,” St Amand continued. “Quantel has been really supportive to Cosmic Post throughout the 18 months it’s taken to go from the initial idea to the fully finished mobile post facility. There are never any hiccups with Pablo – it just plays – it’s a super solid system that we can be completely confident will deliver day in day out, which is critical when you’ve got your client sitting in front of the system making decisions on the fly. And with Quantel there’s no need for complex wrangling – we can take any format in and play any format out too.”
The Cosmic Post mobile facility has already received very favourable reactions from producers who have had a sneak preview; one described the projection set up as the best they’d seen in a compact environment. “The whole set up is designed to give producers and directors complete confidence that what they see on our screen is what they will get in the theater in both 2D and 3D,” St Amand explained. “All the equipment and the whole environment is high end, so to the director it’s just as if they were sitting in any state-of-the-art post house, making decisions in confidence and comfort. Data security is also an issue in conventional post – our on-set self-contained approach eliminates this significant worry for producers as well.”
St Amand already has an eye to the future. “While we’re based in Vancouver, being mobile we can of course be on set anywhere in North America. As the business develops we are looking to invest in more mobile post production facilities so that we can be on the ground on the US and Canadian West and East coasts simultaneously. We’re also looking to expand into Europe in the near future.”
“We’re delighted to be working with such a forward looking group of talented people,” said Ray Cross, Quantel CEO. “Their no-compromise approach to their client offering aligns perfectly with the philosophy behind our technology, and I’m certain that they will be very successful in bringing a new way of doing post to the Canadian market and beyond.”
