Nevion’s Ventura the Basis for GigaContent’s New Video Delivery Platform

Nevion, a provider of managed video services for broadcasters, service providers, and government entities worldwide, has helped Danish service provider GigaContent launch its new video content delivery service, GigaEasylink. The service provides broadcasters and media companies with the ability to access and broadcast video content from any event across Denmark in full broadcast quality.

When GigaContent looked to extend its broadcast services coverage beyond its current fiber-based backbone, it wanted to provide a service that would allow fast and reliable access to broadcast video from multiple points across Denmark. GigaContent aimed for the service to help reduce production costs, lessen the need for mobile production vans and increase coverage with smaller production crews in the field. Once the service was up and running it was also important to facilitate the way content is accessed, shared, and transmitted across the country.

“For the Easylink service to work we needed a solution provider who understood what we were trying to achieve and had the expertise in JPEG 2000 technologies to make it happen,” said Brian Slott, chief technology officer at GigaContent. “After extensive tests it became clear that Nevion had the best J2K solution on the market for our requirements. With their heritage in JPEG 2000 technologies we’ve been able to provide a service that will really make a difference to broadcasters and help reduce their costs. On the back of the installation, we’ve already sold our first GigaEasylink service to a leading Danish broadcaster, so we’re extremely pleased with the results.”

With its low latency JPEG 2000 compression and flexible bitrate, GigaContent chose the Ventura VS901 because of its reliability, modularity, and ease of use. The Ventura system integrates with GigaContent’s GigaBooking service, which allows easy online reservation of connections.

Nevion’s R&D team in Ipswich, UK was integral to the process and worked closely with GigaContent across all elements of the project. Andy Rayner, director of Ventura product management who led the team said of the project: “This was an exciting challenge both from a technical and R&D standpoint.”
