The Switch Opens New Production Center

In preparation for The Switch’s expansion to 44 new locations, a new Network Operations Center (NOC) was constructed at The Switch’s New York City headquarters.

The space, which has been occupied by The Switch since 1991, was completely redesigned and outfitted with a state-of-the-art control room with abilities to monitor and control its new AT&T 10G mesh network. In addition video monitoring capabilities have been expanded with the use of Miranda Multi-Viewers. Skyline DataMiner, an extremely sophisticated SNMP fault reporting system, has also been installed to monitor the health of every component in each POP location from the NOC.

The new space also features dedicated offices, conference areas and a Call Center equipped with an upgraded phone system, quadrupling the capacity for incoming and outgoing calls. Aesthetically the space boasts glass walls, granite, and sleek furniture meant to convey a modern high-tech feel.

In addition to the physical upgrades, high quality infrastructure improvements were incorporated including a new UPS system, a new HVAC system, and two Snell Alchemist PH.C-HD motion compensated high definition standards converters.

“It started as vision in early 2011 that we were able to turn into a reality within six months,” said Howard Miller, EVP, Operations at The Switch. “We built this new state-of-the-art Network Operations Center to prepare for our growth but foremost in our mind was to provide our current and future customers with the highest level of service.”

The concept was designed by Scott Beers, CEO, David Anderson, Chief Technology Officer and Howard Miller, Executive Vice President, Operations. Systems integration was provided by Beck Associates.   Construction began on Memorial Day weekend of 2011 with the successful cutover of the new UPS system. The culmination of this multi-million dollar project was completed this week.
