Avid Interplay Central Delivers Remote Editing Via Proxy

Avid’s NAB Show booth featured a number of new technologies of interest to sports-content creators (including InGame), but it is the promise of Interplay Central that could be a game changer for those who need to produce content remotely.

The system is a next-generation Web-based application that allows editors and producers to remotely reach into the Interplay storage system located at their broadcast or production facility, access video stored there, and build complete video packages through the Web browser.

Jim Frantzreb, senior market segment manager, Media Enterprise, for Avid, says users can access content from laptops, iPads and tablets, and even Blackberrys.

Priced at $5,000 per seat for Web interactive clients, $2,000 for browse-only, and $500 per device, the system allows users to tap into the Interplay server and move H.264 proxies of the hi-res content to the remote device in real time. Clips can then be edited on the laptop and matched up with a script. The editor or producer can lay in graphics, a voiceover track, insert B roll, and adjust natural sound. “There is a sound logic that also equalizes the audio levels,” adds Frantzreb.

Once the piece is completed, the system transports back edit decisions and other materials and reassembles the clip using the high-resolution content that resides on the Interplay server. Format support includes XDCAM, AVC-Intra, and DNxHD.

At this point, there is no ability to integrate locally stored or acquired content into the piece created using Interplay Central, but users can expect that functionality to be added in the future.

Avid also introduced ISIS 5000, a media-storage system that can handle up to 90 client connections and 144 TB of storage. Storage scales from 16 TB to 96 TB (12 TB to 72 TB with RAID) or from 32 TB to 192 TB (24 TB to 144 TB with RAID), as each ISIS 5000 Storage Engine houses 16 1-TB or 2-TB disk drives.
