Commercial vs. Non-Commercial Satellites

In my post “Satellites Are Really Old,” I distinguish between the Emmy-winning first commercial geostationary satellite, Early Bird, and the earlier non-commercial Syncom III. Was the “commercial” distinction Emmy-worthy?

Here’s a link to a story about how the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games coverage was delayed in the United States precisely because it was carried on a non-commercial satellite: http://www.la84foundation.org/SportsLibrary/NASSH_Proceedings/NP2000/NP2000zzb.pdf

I appreciate Craig Johnston’s calling it to my attention.
