NAB Perspectives: Quantum’s Lee Talks ‘Great Content Shift’

The overarching theme of this year’s NAB Show is ‘The Great Content Shift,” the demand for content anytime anywhere. Nowhere is that more prominent than on the sports side as the terms second screen, streaming, and over-the-top have been thrown around like Frisbees on the beach.

SVP Janae Lee believes that the theme of this year's NAB Show is right in line with the shifting demands of the broadcast industry.

“I believe that whoever came up with the content themes for this year’s conference has their finger really on the pulse of the industry,” says Janae Lee, SVP, file system and archive, at Quantum. “This concept of the great content shift and talking about new technologies, new customer expectations, new strategies, and new partners are driving new requirements that we, as participants in the market, have to be able to support.”

At Quantum’s booth in the Lower South Hall, the company unveiled the Scalar LTFS (Linear Tape File System) appliance, which offers new modes of portability and user accessibility for archived content on LTO tape. It features a network-attached–storage frontend and is based on the LTFS open standard for content formatting. Since it works with existing application and file-system tools, LTFS-based content is safe for long-term data protection and archival storage.

Lee says the opportunities provided by their Quantum’s fit right in with “The Great Content Shift.”

“I have customers who, in their desire to build new business models, are creating new sports partnerships so that they become the distribution medium to all of the mobile devices,” she points out. “The roll that we play in that, while it sounds kind of dull, is, we’re the plumbing. But the plumbing has to be there for everything to work. What we do is provide the highest performance environment so that, as people want to stream that data as quickly as possible at the highest level of quality, we’re there to support it.”

Quantum is also highlighting how its StorNext solutions can manage data where increasing storage demands from 4K, 3D, and new content-consumption platforms are straining workflows that create and deliver content.

The company’s booth is also hosting live demonstrations of the new Scalar LTFS appliance and the complete StorNext appliance family, including its new metadata, gateway, archive, and storage systems optimized for StorNext.

Quantum partners — including Autodesk, Dalet, Levels Beyond, OpenText and Telestream — are presenting case studies on integrated StorNext at the booth.
