Ballpark Cam Earns Gold for MLB Network

MLB Network’s Ballpark Cam system was named last night as the mass media gold winner in the Media/Visual Communication category of the Edison Awards, which honor the best in innovation and excellence in the development of new products and services.

“It is an amazing honor for MLB Network’s Ballpark Cam system to receive the gold Edison Award and be recognized for its innovation in the media industry,” said Tony Petitti, president and CEO of MLB Network. “Ballpark Cam has been a labor of love for many people behind-the-scenes, and I’d like to congratulate MLB Network’s Operations, Engineering, Production and Ballpark Cam teams, plus our partners at MLB Productions, on this acknowledgement.”

The Ballpark Cam system is a network of cameras installed in two locations at all 30 ballparks throughout Major League Baseball, controlled remotely from MLB Network’s studios in Secaucus, New Jersey. Using Cisco technologies, the system provides MLB Network with access to live coverage of batting practice, pre- and postgame interviews and updates of games in progress across all of its studio programming.

The Edison Awards are named after Thomas Alva Edison, whose inventions, new product development methods and innovative achievements changed the world and garnered him 1,093 U.S. patents. The ballot of nominees for the Edison Awards was judged by a panel of more than 3,000 leading business executives including past award winners, members of the Marketing Executives Networking Group (MENG), academics and leaders in the fields of product development, design, engineering, science and medical.

Companies were nominated for the 2012 Edison Awards in the following categories: Energy and Sustainability; Science/Medical; Transportation; Applied Technology; Lifestyle and Social Impact; New Retail Frontiers; Living, Working and Learning Environments; Industrial Design; Electronics and Computers; Innovative Services; Material Science; Media/Visual Communication; the Edison Green Award; and the Thomas. A. Edison Marketing Award.
