GlobeCast Salutes the 50th Anniversary of the First Transatlantic Audiovisual Transmission

On July 12, 1962, the first transatlantic television transmission was sent from the town of Pleumeur-Bodou in Brittany, France, to Andover, Maine via the Telstar satellite. Today, exactly fifty years later, GlobeCast is participating in an event organized by the Smithsonian Institution and the French Embassy, which will see a live link between France and the United States.

Beginning with a live feed from 1:30-2:30 p.m. EST between the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. and Pleumeur-Bodou, the event will continue until 4:30 p.m. with a series of presentations and roundtables at the National Air and Space Museum. Speakers from both governments, as well as leading telecommunications and satellite companies, will address the public to mark this historic occasion.

GlobeCast Americas CTO Bart Palmer is among the speakers invited by the Smithsonian Institution and the French Embassy, and will address the progress that broadcast technology has made. His speech will take place at 3:30 p.m.

Finally, GlobeCast will be providing the technical services to ensure successful transmission of the event via satellite, with on-site satellite news gathering (SNG) services and uplink in Washington D.C. and Pleumeur-Bodou.
