Manolo Romero, Managing Director, Olympic Broadcasting Services
to receive Lifetime Achievement Award

New York, NY – October 4th, 2012 — The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) announced the recipients of the 64th Annual Technology & Engineering  Emmy® Awards that will take place on Thursday, January 10th, 2013.  This event marks the seventh consecutive year that the Technology and Engineering Emmy® Awards have been presented during CES.  The reception and presentation will take place in The Bellagio Ballroom at The Bellagio in Las Vegas beginning at 6:30 p.m.

“The National Academy’s Technology and Engineering Achievement Committee is pleased to honor these technology companies and individuals whose innovation and vision have materially affected the way the audience views television and have set the standard  for technological excellence in the industry,” said committee Chairman, Robert P. Seidel, Vice President of CBS Engineering and Advanced Technology.

“We are especially happy to bestow our prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award to Manolo Romero, Managing Director of Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS),” said Malachy Wienges, Chairman, NATAS.  “Romero has been involved with the television coverage of all Olympic Games – both Summer and Winter – since the 1968 Summer Games in Mexico City.  He currently oversees the host broadcast operation for the upcoming Winter Games in Sochi and the recently televised Games from London that were a spectacular success.  He has consistently raised the bar and heightened the viewer experience over the years and the National Academy is proud to honor him with this Award.”

Manolo Romero
A leading executive of internationally televised sporting events, Manolo Romero has been the chief executive of ten different Olympic Games Host Broadcasting organizations. Currently, Romero is the Managing Director of Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS). OBS was created by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to serve as the Host Broadcaster for the Games beginning in Beijing in 2008.

In this role, Romero oversees the host broadcast operation for all Olympic Games.  OBS produced more than 5000 hours of live coverage from the London Games. Preparations have also begun for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Romero most recently supervised the host broadcast operation of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and will also head the planning of the host broadcast operation for the Youth Olympic winter Games in Innsbruck.

Romero served as CEO of Olympic Broadcasting Services Vancouver (OBSV), the Host Broadcaster of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. OBSV provided all 900 hours of coverage in full high definition and surround sound.
In 2008, Romero was responsible for the successful broadcast of the Beijing Olympic Broadcasting (BOB), the Host Broadcaster for the 2008 Olympic Games, where he oversaw the more than 5000 hours of television coverage produced of the Games, all provided in high definition and 5.1 surround sound, marking a first in Summer Games broadcast coverage.

In 2006, Romero was responsible for the successful broadcast of the Torino Olympic Winter Games where he served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Torino Olympic Broadcasting Organisation (TOBO).

The 2000 Sydney Olympic Games television broadcast was also under the leadership of Romero, where he served as Chief Executive of the Sydney Olympic Broadcasting Organisation (SOBO), the Host Broadcaster for the Games. Four years earlier for the 1996 Games, Romero served as both Chief of Atlanta Olympic Broadcasting (AOB) and as a Managing Director of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG).   In 1997, Romero established International Sports Broadcasting (ISB) serving as President/CEO. Under his leadership, ISB served as the Host Broadcaster for both the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympic Winter Games. ISB was the Host Broadcaster of the 1999 World Alpine Skiing Championships in Vail, Colorado. ISB has also served as the Host Broadcaster for the Paralympics in Salt Lake City, Athens and Torino and had the additional responsibility of selling the worldwide broadcasting rights for those Games and Beijing. ISB was the Host Broadcaster of the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and most recently of the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Romero was Head of EBU Sports Operations for Production for several Olympic Games and World Football Cups.  He was also Head of EBU Sports International, where he managed the production of the world feed for the 1994 FIFA World Cup.  Romero headed the Organización de Radio y Television Olímpica (RTO), the Host Broadcaster for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. For his efforts, Romero earned the prestigious Olympic Order, the highest honor given by the IOC and the Medal of the City from the leaders of Barcelona.

Romero a native of Seville, Spain, began his career in 1965 working in the engineering department for TVE, a Spanish television network, and quickly rose to direct that division. He was later placed in charge of the host broadcast operations for the 1982 World Cup. Romero then joined the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) as its Director of European Operations and was then named head of International Operations for ABC at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. His duties included overseeing the host broadcast coverage supplied to the world.

For his efforts in Los Angeles, he received an Emmy Award, the first of eight such honors. In his storied career, Romero has received numerous other broadcast accolades and awards throughout the industry.  Romero received a degree from the University of Madrid, majoring in telecommunications engineering with a minor in economics. He later served the University as an Assistant Professor of Engineering.
