Linear Acoustic Chief Tim Carroll Addresses Audio Loudness at London Loudness Summit

Linear Acoustic Founder and President Tim Carroll was among the featured speakers at The London Loudness Summit 2012 on Dec. 7, delivering a presentation that examined loudness from the consumer’s standpoint with a special focus on compliance versus audio quality.

This year’s Loudness Summit, co-sponsored by Linear Acoustic, brought together industry professionals, technology experts, and legislators, all of whom are focused on the common goal of delivering high-quality television audio to viewers.

“Regulations are appearing because viewers aren’t happy with the loudness shifts in television audio,” says Carroll. “But if broadcasters don’t take a thoughtful approach to measuring and controlling loudness, they risk compromising the vision of the producers who created the content, and that’s not going to make viewers happy either.”

Carroll’s presentation examined potential consequences of blindly measuring and correcting loudness. It also addressed the role of dynamic range compression and metadata and described new hybrid techniques now available in Linear Acoustic audio/loudness platforms which satisfy viewers and preserve content.

A video of the presentation will be available on the company’s website at http://linearacoustic.com following the summit on Dec. 7.
