Study Shows Interactive Gaming Better (for Some) in 3D

Display-Central.com reports that one major question of interest to the 3D display community is “Are interactive games better with 3D displays than in 2D displays?”  A study done by Interactive Games Ontario 3D(iGO3D) (Ontario, Canada) sheds light on this issue.

iGO3D was founded in 2011 (See November 2011 issue of Mobile Display Report) with the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and the S-3D Gaming Alliance (S3DGA) as two of the driving forces, in alliance with other Ontario universities and leading game companies from Canada and the US.  Neil Schneider, Executive Director, S3GDA, and Andrew Hogue, self described “Assistant Professor and Evil Genius,” are iGO3D project leaders.  At the UOIT, Dr. Hogue is in the Game Development & Entrepreneurship program in the Faculty of Business and IT.

The most recent iGO3D research project, with preliminary results announced on March 4th, involved creating a 3D space shooter/maze game with its design focused around interactions in stereoscopic 3D, to determine whether the additional depth cues allow for new interactions not possible in traditional 2D games. The study found 70% of players were able to complete the game on a 3D display in the first play-through, and all the first-time players gave up and failed when playing on a 2D display.   In the end, almost 70% of the gamers rated S-3D experience the same or better than 2D gaming.
