UK's BT plots move to ultra-HD sports

The UK’s telegraph.co.uk reports that BT has outlined plans to combine its dominant position in superfast broadband with the latest ultra-high-definition television technology to exploit its growing roster of sports rights.

Gavin Patterson, the group’s chief executive, said the higher internet speeds enabled by its £2.5bn investment in fibre optic cables will enable it to send pictures in 4K, the resolution supported by the latest televisions and four times sharper than current HD broadcasts.

Regulations mean BT must allow rivals to use its new network to serve customers, but they have made a relatively slow start. Last week BT said it attracted 339,000 superfast broadband subscribers in the third quarter, compared with 35,000 for TalkTalk.
