Venue News: Pasadena To Celebrate Rose Bowl Completion; Atlanta Braves Release New Stadium Renderings

City officials will commemorate the completion of the fourth phase of renovation to the iconic Rose Bowl Stadium this week, just in time for the annual Fourth of July fireworks show, according to the Pasadena Star-News. The renovations include a new plaza in front of Gate A of the stadium, which features a rose shaped mosaic of personalized bricks bearing the names of those who have donated to the stadium. The renovations also included a bioswale, a refurbished Court of Champions and a new field hedge with on-field exits for the lower stadium seats. The renovations were part of a $182 million in improvements made to the stadium over the last two years, including the new Terry Donahue Pavilion premium seating area. This last phase of the renovation came in at about $13 million…

…The Atlanta Braves scored a home run in Cobb County on Tuesday, writes WSB TV. The planning commission approved its massive stadium and development. Braves officials gave the planning commission a more detailed look at their planned stadium and mixed use complex, providing new renderings and insight on what the 80-acre project will look like. They said that since the Braves will be calling this place home, they will do it right.

…A new high-definition video board is coming to Washburn University’s Yager Staduim in time for next season, writes The Topeka Capital-Journal. Washburn plans to install the board in the south end of the stadium, replacing the current video board that was installed in 1996. The new video board will be 19 feet by 40 feet wide and is scheduled to be installed by the Washburn football team’s season opener against Lindenwood on Sept. 4. The video board will be able to show replays and display live in-game stats. In addition, the 15mm Daktronics system will have a new audio system, replacing the current speakers attached to the Bianchino Pavilion…

…After successfully illuminating more than two dozen sports venues across North America with its LED arena lights, Ephesus Lighting in partnership with Durham, NC-based Cree and Duke University, is taking its innovative stadium lighting solution outdoors. Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium, a multi-purpose outdoor facility that serves as home of the women’s field hockey team and is also used for campus recreation and club sports, will become the first NCAA Division I outdoor college sports venue to be lit with LED lighting…

…The IOC wrapped up its first coordination commission meeting for the Tokyo 2020 Games on Friday, saying proposed changes to the venue plan are not as drastic as some have suggested, writes the Associated Press. Cost concerns have prompted Japanese Olympic organizers to review their initial plan of having the majority of venues within an 5-mile radius of the Athletes’ Village venue. Japanese media reported that some sports would be moved to Saitama, a prefecture about an hour north of Tokyo, but the IOC stated that was not discussed.
