University of Tennessee Goes 3G With Ikegami Cameras

A fresh face on the University of Tennessee campus is the Ikegami HDK-95C Full Digital Portable CMOS camera system. Rice and his team selected the CMOS-equipped Ikegami HDK-95C HD portable digital camera, part of Ikegami’s Unicam HD line.

Equipped with Native multi-format 2.5 million pixel, 2/3 inch CMOS sensors, the HDK-95C also features an upgrade path to 24p and 3G formats, including 1080/60p and 4:4:4 24p.

The University of Tennessee is part of the SEC Network, a major force in sports broadcasting that reaches 90 million+ homes. It’s all the better to bring the school’s centuries of history to the screen, telling extremely compelling stories.

“The SEC Network also allows us to increase the volume of stories we tell,” says Barry Rice, Assistant Athletic Director: Broadcasting, University of Tennessee. “Now we’ll push far beyond football and basketball.  Suddenly volleyball, softball, baseball, soccer and all of our student athletes have a platform they’ve never dreamed could exist.”

CMOS sensors are now meeting and exceeding the performance of CCDs in sensitivity, signal-to-noise ratio, and resolution.  They continue to offer low power consumption, no vertical smear, and a high degree of format flexibility.  With extensive ongoing research and development in this technology, the adoption of CMOS for broadcast camera use is now the trend.

Rice and his team had three priorities: look amazing on all formats, durable enough to take an SEC-size beating, and be cost-effective – a unique combo the University of Tennessee got in Ikegami. “The HDK-95C stood up to every test,” Rice says.
