SVG Summit: How Centralized Replay Has Impacted NFL Productions Inside the Truck

Day Two of the SVG Summit, which took place at the New York Hilton on Dec. 16, began with a panel focused squarely on football production and how the NFL’s centralized replay system has changed production operations in the truck this season.

Moderated by SVG’s Ken Kerschbaumer, the panel addressed how official replay is impacting the entire football-production ecosystem, including perspectives from the front bench with NBC Sports’ Sunday Night Football director Drew Esocoff and NFL on Fox lead director Rich Russo, the operations side with Fox Sports Director of Technical Operations Steve Grigely, and the college-sports landscape via Pac-12 Networks SVP of Production and Operations Leon Schweir. In addition, Bexel ESS VP and GM Scott Nardelli, who played an integral role in the design and integration of the NFL’s revamped replay workflow based out of the league office in New York, joined the session to provide background on the NFL’s new system.

In addition to the replay conversation, the panel touched on everything from the increased use of 4K and ultra-slo-mo cameras to the use of next-gen stats within a telecast (or lack thereof, for that matter) to the convergence of the linear telecast and multiscreen experience.
